One day Lord Shiva was doing penance sitting under a Belpatra tree in the forest. When Mother Parvati forgot to bring the material for the worship of Lord Shiva, she completely covered Lord Shiva with the fallen Bel leaves, which made Lord Shiva very happy. Since then Belpatra started being offered to Lord Shiva.
